The Project

The project was to present are proposals our clients Oxford City Council, for the regeneration of the centre of Blackbird Leys. The brief was to work in collaboration with the local community and to come up with some creative design recommendation for the area.

The Site

The site is the district centre of Blackbird Leys, which was developed in the 1950s and 1960s, with many of the buildings now considered to be suffering from significant deterioration. The main buildings of deterioration are the community centre and the retail block and these were the focus of our redevelopment.

The Process

The process started with an analysis of the morphological layers of the site. This meant looking at the permeability, legibility, richness and other layers. Following this, we did a SWOT analysis of the site, to understand the different things we needed to look out for when redeveloping the area. After this to understand more about the demographics of the site we undertook a GIS analysis. This told us about the population like the ethnicity and number of rented properties.

Following this analysis, we created our potential design action for the site. To create these we looked at our analysis and what some of the residents told us in our workshop, to create design actions which would help improve the area for the residents.
