The Project
Royal Docks: Millennium Mills site has been vacant for many years and a recent scheme has just fallen through. This provides an opportunity to reassess the site’s future. We were approached to propose alternative development proposals for the site based on three different approaches to regeneration; the competitive city, the cultural city and the community-led city.
The Site
The Millennium Mills site is part of the Royal Docks which has been left vacant even though there have been many attempts to redevelop the site. The main Millennium Mills building is locally listed with Newham Council, with Silo D another building on the site as Grade II listed.
The Process
The process started with research and learning into the three different types of regeneration techniques to gain a better understanding of them. This meant we could have a clear idea of the techniques and the one we had selected by the time we went on a site visit and met our clients Newham Council. Following the site visit and understood some of the issues, we underwent an in-depth site analysis to properly understand the area, and how the regeneration could make the area a better place.
From this analysis, we could understand the need of the local area, and create a design which would meet this need and help to provide for the local community. Our final presentation style was through the making of a website, which we used Wix to create this (Link below). The design of the site was created using Sketch Up and the graphic on the website were created using either ADobe illustrator or Photoshop.
